Reconstructing classical European values is key to retaking leadership as natives in Europe. We have said to several generations of young Europeans: We don’t have anything great, there is nothing much to be proud of in Europe, and if we find something, we should not talk about it too much.
This is flat out wrong. What we have is the greatest civilization that the world has known. The choice is now whether to remain living in the wastelands of Marxist deconstruction, or rebuild our society. We have the opportunity to restore our culture.
Europe in the Age of Reconstruction: This is what Douglas Murray recently said at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference, stating: “I would like to suggest a name for the age that we should be in and the age that this conference can help bring in. The age of reconstruction. We should be The Reconstructionists. The deconstructionists knew something about how to take things apart but like children with bicycles had no idea how to put them back together.”
As Murray outlined the failures of the Marxist deconstruction theories that Europe has pursued for decades, he suggested its antitheses, namely that Europeans should put the civilization back together, renew their pride in the accomplishments of classical, Western civilization, lift their heads and stop the cultural self-destruction, – and embark on the age of reconstruction.
Douglas Murray is a British bestselling author, commentator and respected journalist. He is an associate editor of the conservative British political magazine The Spectator, and has been a regular contributor to The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, and many more. Murray is a sharp critic of mass immigration to Europe and Islam.
The Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) was launched by Jordan Peters in 2023 and includes intellectuals such as Arthur Brooks, Niall Ferguson, Bjorn Lomborg as well as 30 individuals on its organizing committee. ARC’s CEO and co-founder Baroness Philippa Stroud is the former CEO of the pro-Brexit Legatum Institute.
Europe in the Age of Reconstruction: Murray outlined two broad ideas can help us bring back to pass the civilization that deconstruction has destroyed. The first is innovation. Americans are great at it, yet in Europe and the UK, we still have one in five individuals that simply do not work. They live on welfare benefits. This is a national scandal that our government don’t care to address, he said.
Why is there so much innovation in America? The disparity in innovation between U.S. and Europe is seem in our vastly different attitudes towards risk. America believes that success is risky, life is risky. While Europeans have fallen into complacency and the reliance on benefits and welfare-ism.

Europe in the Age of Reconstruction: It is not enough that a civilization comes across a defining moment, it is when that happens and you know what you are fighting for. You are fighting for your faith, your family, your way of life, your traditions.
The second broad idea is, according to Murray, the ability to look back. We have wasted so much time during the last years talking about the most basic things that our species long have known, such a women and men – the gender issues. What a waste of time.
Such public discussions highlight the de-cultivation of our society, we should now look back into history and find the ideals that made our civilization the greatest in the world, and reclaim them.
Today, it is as if we must welcome people to our countries and pretend that we are unimportant ourselves, so that immigrants can make us interesting. It is as if our places are unimportant, we do not matter.
While we in the West, we have created an extraordinary civilization with complex flavors, the past years have been spent saying to ourselves that our civilization has no flavor. Or that flavor is something that immigration brings to us. We have told this to several generations: We don’t have anything great, and if we do we should not talk about it too much.
Europe in the Age of Reconstruction: This is flat out wrong. What we have is the greatest civilization that the world has known. The choice is now whether to remain living in the wastelands of Marxist deconstruction, or rebuild our society. We have the opportunity to restore our culture.
I would urge in the age of reconstruction, our task is not only to break through with innovation but to reclaim that which is ours. To say that we love it, and that if people wish to join us in the veneration of this civilization, they can join us. T.S. Elliot said that a civilization can be reclaimed in the 11th hour. So, it is never too late.
