Charlie Kirk: Total lack of Free Speech for the UK Indigenous Population

The now martyred Christian leader, Charlie Kirk contrasts the cultural atmosphere of the UK with that of the US, especially highlighting how the UK resembles America before Donald Trump’s political rise.

The UK is described as culturally subdued and constrained by unspoken taboos about what can be discussed, whereas Trump’s era in the US marked a significant breaking of these barriers.

The UK is in a state of cultural and political decline, with an environment where questioning prevailing norms, defending free speech, supporting the nation state and expressing opinions about excessive immigration is heavily restricted.

Total lack of Free Speech for the UK: Charlie Kirk recounts personal experiences traveling to London, Oxford, and Cambridge, participating in media appearances, and observing the cultural and political climate firsthand. There is a sense of frustration and sadness about the UK’s direction, described as totalitarian and depressing. His visit reinforced appreciation for American freedoms and political optimism.

After visiting the UK, Charlie Kirk said at the Charlie Kirk Show: “For 10 years, we have had more robust discussions about the downfall of America and its core reasons and its causes. And we take it for granted. I’m telling you, visiting that totalitarian that unfortunately the UK has become  It is tragic. It is sad. Britain is why we Americans exist. It is chilling and depressing.”

“In the UK, 30 people a day are arrested for offensive social media posts. 30 people a day, think about that! One woman is going to serve two and a half years in prison for an offensive social media post that she deleted and apologized for. This is happening in the country that invented free speech, and sent it to America.”

Total lack of Free Speech for the UK: Kirk further frames Donald Trump’s political emergence as a pivotal moment that expanded the Overton window—the range of acceptable public discourse—by giving people permission to speak openly on previously taboo subjects.

Despite widespread criticism and media backlash, Trump’s unapologetic rhetoric on immigration, border security, and cultural issues emboldened millions to voice their concerns and challenge prevailing narratives. This, in turn, shifted American political culture toward greater openness in discussing sensitive and controversial topics.

Total lack of Free Speech for the UK: Despite America’s many challenges, Charlie Kirk argues that the country’s foundational values—especially freedom of speech and the collective belief in problem-solving—distinguish it from other Western societies. This spirit is not only a source of national pride, but also a critical factor in America’s resilience and future potential. He urges viewers to recognize and appreciate these freedoms, which are at risk elsewhere.

The UK is highlighted as having a troubling approach to freedom of speech, especially regarding social media. Charlie Kirk cites the example of Lucy Connelly, a woman sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for offensive tweets that she deleted and apologized for. This case is used to illustrate the harsh and punitive measures taken against speech deemed offensive, with around 30 people arrested daily in the UK for social media offenses. This contrasts starkly with the US, where similar speech would not result in imprisonment.

Charlie Kirk points at two core American values that are underappreciated but crucial: Freedom of speech and the entrepreneurial, problem-solving spirit of America. Despite its problems, America’s ability to confront and solve issues, combined with its cultural emphasis on resilience and grit, is portrayed as unique and a blessing. This spirit is contrasted with the perceived defeatism in Britain, where the cultural mood is described as resigned and dispirited.

He concludes that one of Donald Trump’s most significant but underappreciated contributions was normalizing frank and controversial political discourse. By expanding the Overton window, Trump allowed Americans to openly discuss issues such as immigration, affirmative action, and cultural identity, which had previously been taboo. His influence created a cultural shift toward speaking openly about contentious topics, which continues to shape American politics.

Total lack of Free Speech for the UK: Kirk further implies that the cultural wars ignited during the Trump era are ongoing and necessary for maintaining and expanding freedom. The permission to speak openly about difficult topics must be defended and extended, especially in the face of increasing political correctness, cancel culture, and government overreach. The US and UK represent divergent paths in this struggle, with America still fighting for openness and the UK sliding toward cultural suppression.

He also stresses the need for individuals to actively protect their personal property rights (such as home ownership) and broader civil liberties. Just as homeowners must guard against title fraud, citizens must be alert to threats against their freedom of speech and cultural liberties. This vigilance is a personal and collective responsibility critical to sustaining democracy.
