In a recent interview with Uncommon Knowledge, Dr. Charles Murray tells his story and adds to the trend as religion – defined as the Christian belief in God and Jesus Christ as the cornerstone faith in the Western civilization – is gaining remarkable ground among leading intellectuals. A Harvard graduate, author and noted political scientist, he explains the intellectual journey from secular atheism to seriously engaging with religion.
Murray describes how spiritual perceptiveness as a dimension of human experience initially was far from him. “My meandering pilgrimage to belief has been devoid of divine revelation. It’s been a more arid process, but it has been rewarding. And if you’re like me, it’s the only game in town,” Dr. Charles Murray points out in his book Taking Religion Seriously. Murray slowly experienced a significant shift in his worldview and critiques modern secular academic narrative that dismisses religion as a whole. While atheists said religion and faith in God would subside in the modern world, the opposite has happened.
Through the mathematical elegance of the universe, the cosmological argument for a creator, and compelling evidence from near-death experiences, Dr. Murray found his agnosticism increasingly unsatisfactory. His strict belief in scientific materialism was challenged by rational facts and the laws of science.
For example, mathematical order reflects intentionality. The universe’s laws exhibit elegant mathematical precision, like E=mc2, that defy random chance. This connects to the fine-tuning argument in cosmology, reinforcing that physical laws are improbably configured to permit life, thus offering a stronger foundation for belief in intelligent design.” Someone” who resides outside of time, space and the physical laws that govern the universe must have pushed the world into existence, as nothing comes from nothing.
Murray stresses that the scientific community’s disregard of phenomena such as near-death experiences, reopen the possibility of soul, spirit, and a transcendent dimension. This challenges the prevailing atheist scientific materialism which denies any other reality than the tangible and empirically provable.
The historic texts of the New Testament which are refused as first hand sources by atheists were also scrutinized by Murray. He was very surprised to find that meticulous research clearly supports early Gospel authorship, eyewitness testimony, and the early dating and historical reliability of the Gospels.
Murray explains that in the early Gospel composition twenty to thirty years post-crucifixion, the eyewitness accounts were overwhelming in the historical, first source texts. For example, the distinct portrayals of Mary and Martha in John and Luke and the correct use of historical names, offer substantive historical credibility to foundational texts.
It is important to note that the Bible is the most widely read book in the world. and the most quoted text in history. An analysis based on the number of copies sold over the past fifty years, revealed that the Bible sold over 3.9 billion copies. It is of significantly higher quality than any other book of its kind.
After decades of atheist secularism treating religion dismissively, the resurgence of faith among leading intellectuals demonstrates a perceptive re-awakening to the religious roots that made Western civilization possible. Without Christianity, the West is no more.
