“What I find shocking is that in the last 30 years, I have witnessed Western societies, the Netherlands, Britain, the United States of America, forces emerging from within either subscribing to communism or establishing Islamism here, saying let’s deconstruct Western civilization.”
“The Islamists among us, the communists among us are saying let’s shift the institutions away from the focus on the individual towards the collective. The result, to be quite clear, is just going to be where I came from, Somalia,” says bestselling author, former member of the New Atheist movement and now a Christian activist, Ayaan Hirsi Ali at the ARC conference in London.
No Alternative to Christian Western Civilization: “The deconstruction has been happening in the last few decades. Now it is time to reconstruct all of these Western institutions back to focusing on the individual’s well-being, and brick by brick and piece by piece rebuild all of these institutions. Do not give in to the demands of Islamists. Confront them with the question, “Why are you here if Sharia law is so fantastic? Why are so many people in Muslim countries moving to the the infidel West?”
Central Western values are freedom of choice and individuality. These ideals distinguish Western civilization from communism and Islamism. Religious freedom, trust in law enforcement, educational integrity, and media accountability were pillars of traditional Western society.
Self-reflection and accountability are crucial strengths of the West that must be preserved. The deterioration of law and order and the endangerment of vulnerable populations reflect a broader societal crisis.
Hirsi Ali observes the troubling trend where forces from communist ideologies and Islamism are influencing Western societies in a strong way, seeking to deconstruct Western civilization’s focus on individual well-being and reshape institutions towards collective control.

Hirsi Ali recounts the erosion of freedoms she once enjoyed, such as the ability to walk or bike anywhere at any time without fear. Today, in parts of Western Europe women are afraid to go out due to crime, including significant reports of mass abuse of young women (approximately 250,000 in Britain) by non-Western criminal gangs. She argues such atrocities disqualify Western leaders from morally lecturing other countries on human rights.
No Alternative to Christian Western Civilization: Upon arriving in July 1992, Ayaan was immediately struck by the visible freedom of girls and women on the streets, a stark contrast to her Muslim upbringing where women’s roles and choices were severely restricted. She watched the Western freedom to choose one’s spouse rather than the Muslim world where she came from with arranged or forced marriages, noting her own family’s experience with polygamy.
Hirsi Ali was also shocked by her encounter with the concept of religious freedom in the West: People could worship God freely or not at all, unlike her upbringing where Muslim worship was mandatory and driven by fear.

No Alternative to Christian Western Civilization: She praises Western schools, which in her view back in 1992 focused on imparting knowledge and character development rather than indoctrination, contrasting this with the forced indoctrination found in communist and Islamist schooling systems.
Hirsi Ali draws vivid contrasts in state-citizen relationships: In her native regions (Somalia, Ethiopia), the police represent an oppressive state feared by citizens, often untrusted and associated with corruption or violence. Conversely, in the Netherlands, police officers were helpers and protectors whom citizens willingly call for assistance.
She reflects on small businesses, noting Western entrepreneurs operate freely in an environment respecting private property, unlike the constant fear of state theft she witnessed elsewhere.
The universities produced graduates who contribute positively to society, as she saw it in 1992 when arriving to Europe, unlike the indoctrination-driven systems she experienced. Media played a role in holding governments accountable and allowed critical debates and critical thinking rather than only functioning as the government’s propaganda tools, like she was used to from her African experience.

“It is much more prominent in New York, the Democratic Socialists and the Fabian Societies, there’s this idea idealist romantic story that if only communism was done one more time, this time differently, it’s going to yield something else. It will not. It is going to yield the exact same thing as it yields everywhere from Mogadishu to Caracas to the Soviet Union: Lots of dead people, starvations, hunger. There is no alternative to what the Christian Western civilization has built,” she says.
Hirsi Ali stresses the importance of rebuilding institutions focused on the individual’s well-being, brick by brick. She calls for resistance to Islamist demands and poses a critical question to Islamists: if Sharia law is so ideal, why do many Muslims seek refuge in Western countries?
Christian Western Civilization: She critiques the romanticization of communism by contemporary leftist groups, asserting that reimplementing it would inevitably produce failures marked by hunger, death, and repression, as historically demonstrated.
She emphasizes that Western freedom must be continuously defended and understood, countering “utopian” belief in alternative systems that have repeatedly failed. She points out how censorship, political correctness, and self-censorship have contributed to silencing warnings against such ideologies.
This signals a stark warning of societal decay when institutions lose focus on protecting individual freedoms.
Hirsi Ali praises the West’s capacity for its self-reflection and honest autopsy of failures, viewing mistakes as opportunities to correct course. The West’s nurturing of the individual leads to accountability and responsibility, foundational to its institutions.
Contrastingly, societies under communism and Islamism scapegoated external groups and refused to take individual responsibility due to systemic denial of individuality. She highlights that removing the layers of personal accountability in Western thinking, now often labelled by socialists as “white supremacy,” has greatly weakened society’s moral fabric.
