The EU is an intellectual misconception losing relevance and competitiveness

The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, provides a gloomy analysis of EU as an intellectual misconception that has failed to protect traditional European values and sovereignty.

At CPAC 2025 Conference, he discussed the migration crisis as a deliberate socio-political strategy by the Marxist European Left to transform Europe’s conservative and traditional cultural and demographic landscape by introducing predominantly Muslim migrants who do not share Europe’s Christian heritage.

EU losing relevance: Orbán argues that migration is fundamentally altering the political balance by diminishing the influence of native-born, Christian voters.  The EU’s foundational idea—that a supranational union can govern diverse nations without clear accountability—is flawed. This structure has led to a loss of sovereignty, democratic deficit, and inability to address critical issues like migration or economic reform effectively.

It highlights the tension between national sovereignty and supranational governance, a debate central to EU politics. Orbán’s framing suggests that without reform or dissolution, the EU’s current model is unsustainable.

EU losing relevance: He contrasts Hungary’s strict anti-migration policies with Western European countries that have already accepted millions of migrants, expressing skepticism about the possibility of reversing these demographic changes through “remigration.”

Orbán presents migration not merely as a humanitarian or economic issue but as a deliberate left-wing strategy to change the cultural and electoral makeup of Europe. By increasing the Muslim migrant population, who are unlikely to vote for Christian conservative parties, the political balance shifts in favor of the left and progressive agendas. This insight reveals how migration intersects with identity politics, electoral strategy, and long-term societal transformation, making it a highly contentious and polarized issue in Europe.

EU losing relevance: Migration is framed as a deliberate political strategy to alter Europe’s demographic and cultural identity. Hungary’s zero-tolerance migration policy contrasts sharply with Western Europe’s acceptance of millions of migrants.

Orbán points out that the only way to stop immigration is to stick to the laws that Europe had for centuries: You need a permit in order to enter into another country. If you enter without a permit, you break the law.

While Hungary has maintained strict migration controls, Orbán expresses pessimism about countries like Germany or Sweden reversing their demographic shifts. He points to the concentration of migrants in urban areas and their strong community and spiritual bonds, which he believes will reinforce their demographic and political presence. This suggests that once migration reaches a critical mass, social and political integration becomes increasingly complex, challenging conventional assimilation narratives.

He encourages rebellion against EU migration policies rather than relying on reforms, which he believes will not bring meaningful change. Orbán also stresses the importance of family policies designed to boost fertility rates as an alternative to migration. Noteworthy, it was the Leftwing parties in Europe that pushed for abortion rights in the 1960s and won. The result is millions of unborn Europeans, now replaced by millions of foreigners who do not share Europe’s Christian heritage or traditional values.

Hungary’s extensive family support policies, including tax exemptions for mothers and pro-family incentives, are Orbán’s answer to demographic decline without resorting to migration. This proactive approach contrasts with many Western countries’ reliance on migration to sustain population levels and labor markets. Orbán’s policy model presents a conservative, values-based alternative emphasizing fertility, family cohesion, and national continuity.

On economic and institutional issues, Orbán views the EU as losing competitiveness and heading toward financial insolvency, with its survival tied to costly financial transfers and debt accumulation. He underscores the need for strong leadership to implement painful economic reforms, something he claims is lacking in current European leadership.

Orbán stresses that economic competitiveness is the EU’s core challenge, with its current path leading to increasing debt and financial instability. He argues that only strong leadership willing to implement painful reforms can restore competitiveness, a role he claims is absent in present European leadership. This highlights the political difficulty of structural economic reforms in democratic societies, especially amid rising populism and divergent national interests.

EU losing relevance: Recognizing the entrenched influence of progressive ideologies in academia and culture, Orbán advocates for building alternative institutions to nurture traditional Christian and national values. This long-term cultural strategy reflects broader global trends where conservative movements seek to reclaim cultural narratives and values through education, media, and civil society, aiming to balance or counteract progressive dominance.

Culturally, Orbán acknowledges the dominance of leftist progressive ideologies in universities, but insists on creating alternative cultural institutions to preserve traditional values. He reflects on his own political evolution from a youthful liberal freedom fighter to a conservative defender of family, nation, and Christian values. The role of cultural institutions and education should be to counter the highly destructive progressive leftist dominance to preserve traditional values.

He sees freedom not only as freedom from oppression but freedom for service to higher ideals such as family and the nation.
