In a time when conservatism and capitalism are often demonized by the authoritarian socialists who have dominated the Western narrative for decades, it may be useful to recall what these terms actually mean.
Modern conservatism is defined as a philosophy or worldview that believes that the best possible society is developed by preserving the historical, traditional values that made the West a world-leading civilization.
Conservatism advocates a clear anti-racist stance and asserts that the classic Western principle of equality and equal treatment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, class, or religion is a very important ideal to uphold.
It does not want people to be evaluated on the basis of skin color, but advocates equal treatment regardless of ethnicity. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines conservatism as a political philosophy that values tradition and social stability as ideals, with an emphasis on stable, well-functioning institutions and a preference for gradual change rather than Marxist bloody revolutions.
Classical liberalism was part of conservatism and advocated respect for individual rights, democracy, free competition, free speech and low government control. Historical liberalism’s emphasis on the individual’s right to choose how he wants to live his life, albeit with responsibility to the community and without harming others, is classical modern conservatism. Freedom of choice and free expression are backbone principles.
This liberal element is not at all the same as what we today associate with a “liberal society.” We often think of borderlessness, hedonism, open borders, as well as atheism without much ethics; and a society where solidarity with others is weak. Historical liberalism was something completely different. It has been redefined by the socialists to mean something completely different than its original, conservative meaning.

Modern conservatism actively opposes the Marxist, socialist idea of state control and instead places social responsibility on the individual. It wants the state to have as little control as possible over the individual’s finances, property, and life choices.
Conservatism promotes the belief in private ownership, private property rights, and the worker’s right to own the fruits of their own labor. People should pay as little tax as possible and be free to choose how they want to spend their own hard-earned money.
Central to this is the idea of power sharing and decentralization of state power so that decision-making is as close as possible to individuals and local communities. A conservative government will be concerned with decentralizing power and allowing municipalities to decide much more for themselves.
People should have freedom. Conservatism supports free market capitalism, which has been the economic model of the West for several hundred years, with its emphasis on the individual owning their own labor and determining their own life.
Conservative politics and capitalism have often gone hand in hand. Capitalism is the economic model that has prevailed in the West for several hundred years. The desire is for a society characterized by private ownership and private property rights, individual rights and ownership of one’s own labor, as well as healthy competition between parties that stimulates economic growth.
Merriam-Webster defines capitalism as an economic system in which the means of production are privately owned in a free market, in a free market economy. There is a strong emphasis on personal freedom.
Historically, capitalism became an economic tool that freed individuals from the constraints of class society and enabled millions of people to move up the social ladder. In medieval feudal society, it was very difficult for farmers, workers, or businessmen to earn enough capital to break out of class structures. It was capitalism that freed individuals from this pre-modern system.
Conservatism seeks to uphold religious freedom with an emphasis on the right of individuals to practice their faith as they wish, and to promote respect for plurality and diversity. Modern Western conservatism values the traditional Christian ethic’s emphasis on charity as an ideal and supports national sovereignty as a principle.
In its original form, capitalism was inextricably linked to Christian Protestant ethics and contributed to the ideal of a society based on trust, where people could rely on each other to a large extent.
Today’s crude capitalism can be said to be disconnected from social responsibility to a far greater extent, definitely without emphasis on Christian ethics and the requirement that capital owners should act in accordance with what is best for society as a whole.
