The late 19th-century proclamation of the “death of God” by Friedrich Nietzsche implied that humanity must create its own values apart from the traditional Christian morality that strongly influenced the West.
Nietzsche’s atheism was already drawn up by influencers such as Karl Marx. Marxist ideology explicitly aims at destroying traditional morality and modern society as we know it, in order to establish a new set of morality that is detached from Christianity and the historic, Western values that formed the West.
The Marxist contemporary vision of isolated liberal individuals pursuing personal desires often mirrors an immature, hedonistic pursuit akin to that of a child acting on immediate gratification without higher order integration. This immature model of selfhood is unsustainable and leads to societal and individual dysfunction.
These are the elements discussed in the Alliance for Responsible Citizens (ARC) Conference panel, led by clinical psychologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Jordan Peterson. Other participants in the panel were journalist and author, Louise Perry, author and columnist at UnHerd, Mary Harrington and Dr. Stephen Blackwood, the founding President of Ralston College.
“Traditions are experiments that worked. What we have found, having rejected the sexual norms of the past, is that they were there for a reason… The winners of the sexual revolution have not been women…and the great losers of the sexual revolution are children” – says journalist and author, Louise Perry. The Marxist ideal of the sexualized woman, available to any man at any time, drastically changed gender relations and sexual behavior. It implied the rejection of traditional sexual norms based on faithfulness in a marriage between a man and a woman, in favor of a consent-based, individualistic approach.
The Marxist 1960s sexual revolution is characterized both by technological advances and ideological shifts rejecting traditional sexual norms. The dominant ideology of the sexual revolution posits that consent is the only rule governing sexual relations, discarding all previous norms. The introduction of birth control technologies was central to the success of the sexual revolution, as it implied the social legalization of hedonism which produced women that freely engaged with numerous sexual partners and not only their husbands.
This has not benefited all equally; while some have gained, women, children and men in general have been the losers. A significant social consequence is the breakdown of traditional family structures, with many children growing up without biological fathers, which is linked to highly negative outcomes.

Evidently, there are psychological evidence of the healthy limits to sexual narcissism. Approximately 50% of children in some urban contexts reach age 15 without living with their biological fathers, a trend linked to family instability and social problems. The “winners” of the sexual revolution are often men employing short-term mating strategies, who clinical literature describes as psychopathic, Machiavellian, narcissistic, and sadistic. Clinical observations indicate that attempts to override innate responses to sexual exclusivity or jealousy often result in psychological distress, e.g., a man vomiting after his wife’s first encounter with another partner in polyamory.
Human beings are naturally inclined toward short-term gratification impulses, which can be detrimental if not moderated. Good culture channels and integrates these impulses, guiding individuals to make decisions beneficial for long-term well-being and societal cohesion. The current hedonist moment, shaped by the sexual revolution, fails to do this effectively, leading to social and familial instability.
Humans are self-conscious creatures with an inherent nature that cannot be completely reconstructed or disregarded. True freedom is realized not in arbitrary choices but in responsible commitments that emerge from one’s cultural and historical context.
Culture is the “soil” in which human beings grow and realize their potential; a healthy culture nourishes the development of virtue, meaning, and higher-order values.
Nihilism and social fragmentation arise when culture fails to provide this nourishing environment. Neurologically and psychologically, human maturation involves integrating basic hedonic desires into a broader framework of higher-order values.
This integration allows individuals to pursue pleasure in a way that is sustainable and socially coherent rather than self-destructive.
Elevating immediate gratification above all else undermines both personal well-being and social cohesion.
The conclusion of the ARC panel discussion on the sexual revolution is that the pursuit of immediate sexual gratification is unsustainable. A society organized around individualistic, hedonistic values similar to a toddler’s impulses is doomed to failure. Such a model neglects the necessity of higher-order integration essential for survival and flourishing.
There is no avoiding that traditional, historical Western norms of morality had a high functional value. Sexual norms and cultural traditions are not arbitrary restrictions but evolved responses to biological realities and social necessities. Their wholesale rejection has produced unintended negative consequences, especially for women and children.
Furthermore, technological freedom does not automatically equate progress. The ability to transcend biological limits via technology is not inherently good; it must be assessed relative to its effects on human flourishing. Unrestrained technological freedom can lead to social breakdown and personal dissatisfaction.
A thriving culture mediates between our biological impulses and technological capabilities, fostering virtues and commitments that enable human beings to flourish individually and socially.
True education must guide individuals to embody virtues that transcend mere personal liberty and impulse satisfaction, rooting identity and freedom in transcendent truths and communal commitments.
What becomes clear today is that despite cultural nihilism, many young people seek truth, beauty, goodness, justice, and meaning, indicating a fertile ground for cultivating a culture of genuine human flourishing.
Freedom is best understood as the responsible capacity to make meaningful commitments rather than an unbounded license to satisfy selfish desires.
