World population should be reduced to 4 billion by 2020, a newstudy argues. The reduction from 8.3 billion is not to be achieved by compulsory population control such as was practised in eugenics nor is it a misanthropic suggestion.
Rather, to reduce world population to 4 billion is a “pro human solution” designed to save the planet.
The argument is that pressure on the earth’s eco-environment is intensified precisely by population growth, so the solution is to dramatically reduce the population size. This would help end the high “greenhouse gas emissions” and “waste” and thereby secure environmental sustainability.
“Gently ending and reversing population growth and moderating per capita impacts is a pro-nature and pro-human strategy,” the authors point out in the paper’s conclusions.
“It will ease pressure on natural resources, lessen poverty in high-fertility regions by way of smaller family sizes, reduce pollution, reduce resource and immigration conflicts, and improve quality of life in densely populated areas. A more modest population (e.g., gently easing population to 4 billion by 2200) would protect Earth’s natural heritage, including its wild habitats, wild species, and its climate.”
The proposal, published in the journal Sustainable Development, calls for people to voluntarily reduce population growth through greater access to contraception, education, abortion and other pregnancy ending services often summed up in the term “family planning and reproductive healthcare”.

The report points out that this could be achieved by abortions and other family planning services as well as giving girls who live in poverty better education. “When women are free to decide how many children to have, fertility rates tend to fall toward replacement level or below, often rapidly,” the study asserts.
“While we have achieved significant progress in many areas—improving lifespan and quality of life, reducing child mortality, alleviating poverty, expanding access to education and upholding human rights—our collective impact upon the planet’s ecosystems has become overwhelming and unsustainable,” they write.

The idea that Homo sapiens are essentially a burden on the natural world and need to be kept in check by an authoritarian fist is a well-known and old idea. It came forefront in the NAZI regime during World War II, and is resurfacing today.
This perspective is at odds with the belief system of some individuals, who contend that the crux of the issue does not lie in overpopulation, but rather in the inaction of governments and corporations in leveraging the available resources effectively.
For instance, there is evidence indicating that it is possible to produce a sufficient quantity of food to feed the global population in a sustainable manner. However, achieving this goal would necessitate significant alterations in both priorities and policy.
A review of modern history reveals numerous reasons to be highly concerned about suggestions of population control. Forced sterilization programs, coercive one-child policies, and colonial-era rhetoric attributing the poor’s strain on resources to their own actions have all been implemented under the guise of managing a “healthy” population.
The researchers responsible for this study, however, do not posit any such claims. Conversely, their philosophy posits that we should expand choice and freedom, not restrict them, particularly in the case of women.
“The pursuit of ever-increasing wealth and consumption is not ecologically sustainable. It is imperative that our societies confront this disconcerting reality as soon as possible,” they added.
The findings of the present study indicate that the ongoing escalation in population and resource consumption is not aligned with the interests of future generations and will not achieve sustainability. The most promising avenue for ensuring a sustainable and equitable future on a global scale is to facilitate both end of population growth and its subsequent equitable and judicious reversal, while concurrently moderating per capita impacts, the paper continues.
