The Authentic Jesus Versus the Sanitized American Version: Jesus preached the Kingdom of God as fundamentally different from worldly empires characterized by oppression and injustice. Being a follower of Christ means embracing Kingdom values which require speaking truth to power and actively opposing injustice and oppression, says Dr. Davis.
True discipleship involves participation in suffering, sacrifice, and controversy, rather than conforming to political correctness or societal comfort.
Jesus’ teachings demand inconvenient love—loving enemies, forgiving grudges, and aiding those who are different or marginalized, regardless of personal discomfort or social norms. Following Christ means being willing to be inconvenienced and involved in the suffering of others, mirroring Jesus’ own ministry among the poor, oppressed, and marginalized. Christianity, as practiced by many today, often avoids this inconvenience, favoring comfort and superficial expressions of faith.
There is a disconnect between the label “Christian” and the actual practice of Christ’s teachings, leading to widespread hypocrisy, complacency, and moral decay within many churches. Many who identify as Christians do not live as disciples; they lack the love, activism, and sacrifice that true discipleship demands.

The Authentic Jesus Versus the Sanitized American Version: “I don’t think people understand who the real Jesus was. In America, we have constructed the kind of Jesus that we want. We have sanitized, deodorized, romanticized a type of “Jesus” rather than Jesus of the Bible,” says Dr. Reginald Davis: “People think that Jesus was this calm rabbi that never got angry, person that never sided with the poor, always going just going around smiling. No, that is not the original Jesus. Jesus took on the political and religious establishment of his day. He stood up against the structures that continued to oppress people, he came to the aid of women. He incorporated women in his ministry. He was doing many radical things that a person would not do at that time.”
The rise of atheism and secularism is partly due to this failure of Christians to embody the transformative and self-sacrificial love taught by Jesus.
The Christianity of Christ is a movement focused on liberation, social justice, and love for humanity. True Christianity cannot be institutionalized without losing its revolutionary essence, as institutionalization leads to power struggles and compromises. The New Testament originally referred to followers of Jesus as disciples, emphasizing active following and transformation rather than just adopting a label. Jesus incorporated women into his ministry, which was radical for his time, showing his commitment to challenging social norms and oppression. He actively helped those marginalized by society, including the poor and oppressed, demonstrating the practical nature of his Kingdom message.
Discipleship involves embodying Christ’s mission: loving sacrificially, feeding the hungry, advocating for justice, and transforming society. Modern Christianity often reduces faith to a label or cultural identity, without the corresponding actions that mark genuine discipleship.
Love, according to Jesus, is not a passive feeling but a motivating force that compels action for the sake of others, especially the oppressed and marginalized. Genuine Christian love requires sacrifice, involvement, and practical help, not just religious ritual or attendance at church services. Without this active love, claims to follow Christ are hollow and misleading.
Following Jesus means embracing a faith that challenges societal norms, exposes injustice, and demands personal sacrifice and inconvenience. Comfort, political correctness, and complacency are antithetical to the Kingdom values Jesus taught.
The widespread failure to live out the radical love and justice of Christ has led to a diluted Christianity that is disconnected from its biblical roots. This disconnect contributes to social problems such as inequality, injustice, and the rise of secularism and atheism.
When Christianity becomes institutionalized, it risks becoming complicit with political, social, and economic structures that contradict Jesus’ teachings. The focus should be on creating a movement of disciples committed to transforming society through Kingdom values, not on maintaining religious institutions or cultural identities. Jesus said people would recognize his followers by their fruit—by their actions, especially their love and advocacy for the oppressed. A genuine follower of Christ must be actively involved in helping others and fighting injustice, not merely professing faith.
The Authentic Jesus Versus the Sanitized American Version: The love that God showed by sending Jesus should compel believers to love others actively, including those who are different or difficult to love. Without this love, religious practice becomes empty and hypocritical. Believers must discern and choose to embrace the Christianity that reflects Jesus’ true mission.
Reinvigorating Christianity will require a return to the radical teachings and example of Jesus, moving beyond mere cultural or nominal Christianity.
Christians who seek only comfort or social acceptance are not fully following Christ. Genuine Christian love transcends political parties, racial differences, and social divisions. Christians are called to act rightly because it is morally right, not for political gain or social convenience. The New Testament contrasts living by the flesh—marked by jealousy, envy, slander, and hypocrisy—with living by the Spirit, which reflects Christ’s character.
Being “born again” means dying to self and living anew in Christ, a spiritual transformation that is essential for authentic Christian life. Simply attending church services does not equate to following Christ; the essence lies in living out his teachings in daily life. Jesus’ ministry was largely outside the temple and church institutions, focusing on real-world engagement with human suffering.
The apostle James’ teaching that love for others is proof of genuine faith reinforces the idea that action is essential to authentic Christianity. Hatred or indifference toward others invalidates claims of love for God.
Despite a strong Christian cultural identity, American society struggles with moral decline, injustice, and social fragmentation. This paradox challenges the notion that America is truly a Christian nation in the biblical sense.
