Recent reports have raised questioned the involvement of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ukraine, particularly in relation to the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
What has taken place in Ukraine the past years, is the leftist-liberal politization of the Ukrainian Church, to the point of mass persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Zelenskyy regime.
America’s USAID indirectly funds persecution in Ukraine: As it now turns out, it has been American USAID money that has indirectly or directly financed the persecution of Ukrainian Christians, its priests and its leaders.
The Herland Report has over the years written much about this. The world-famous Monastery of the Caves, the Holy Dormition Kiev Caves Lavra dates back to the 11th Century. It is the holiest site in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and has been at the center of attention, as the Zelenskyy government has decided to expel the church from this site, pledging to take its hundreds of years’ old holy relics and turning these over to museums. The thousand year old monastery is to be a place for arts, crafts and military rehab.
As it turns out, these horrifying breaches of religious freedom has been indirectly financed by USAID and other Western NGOs.
America’s USAID indirectly funds persecution in Ukraine: An international lawyer, Robert Amsterdam, representing Amsterdam & Partners LLP, is defending the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He recently presented his findings at International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington, D.C.
The shocking Soviet style repression that has been ongoing for years now, causing so much suffering for the Ukrainian people, has been indirectly funded by the American government. The politization of religion has been deliberately used in Ukraine, and should stop immediately. When politics is used to quench religious freedom, we return to the muddy waters of state atheism in the Soviet Union.

America’s USAID indirectly funds persecution in Ukraine: Apparently, when President Zelenskyy was elected in 2019, USAID and NGOs coerced him into pressuring the Ukrainian Church, splitting it by force in two.
Reportedly Zelenskyy was flat out threatened to carry through this division of the traditional Church, the USA utilizing its aid programs through the USAID to pay its way into influencing Ukrainian politics, and push for the persecution of Ukrainian Christians. If Zelenskyy did not pursue the USAID interest, he would forcefully be removed from power.
The newly founded Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) was put in place to oppose the traditional, historical Ukrainian church which is the founding Church for the whole eastern region, Russia as well, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Saint Olga of Kiev brought Christianity to then Russian Kiev, and is hailed as the mother of Christianity in the East, both in today’s Ukraine which used to be a region in Russia, as well as in Mother Russia herself. The Slavic peoples of Rus’ historically recieved the faith from the Byzantine Greeks. What is traditionally known as the Baptism of Rus’ dates to the mass baptism under St. Vladimir in Kiev, in the Dneipr River.
As USAID abruptly closed down in February 2025, as a consequence of the DOGE investigations into the USAID misuse of taxpayer money, many see this as a victory against the misusing of taxpayer money for such horrid abuse of religious freedom.
“In attacking its own people in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian state imagines it is weakening Russia,” said Amsterdam, “but it is, in fact, only dividing its own populace. In addition to the state’s plans to ban the entire Church, it is also targeting individual Church representatives, such as His Eminence Metropolitan Arseny of Svyatogorsk, who has been languishing in detention for nearly a year on bogus charges.”
America’s USAID indirectly funds persecution: Robert Amsterdam have spoken with Western media outlets and international human rights organizations many times in order to raise awareness of the Ukrainian government’s plans to ban its largest religion. They also launched Save the UOC to sound the alarm, which nobody have listened to, until now as President Donald Trump reverses the globalist-liberal strategies for the war in Ukraine.
Yet, this type of Soviet persecution has happened so many times before. It is a classical strategy for Marxists to sabotage, divide and crush the Christian Church, and has been pursued a high-end Marxist goal for generations.
As Karl Marx explained his hatred of traditional, historical Western values – the very values that made our civilization so successful – Marxists, socialists, communists and others who have fallen prey to his message have continued the persecution of the Church in general. Its message of God, the family, the unity of marriage, the protection of children and teachings of personal responsibility, civility, virtues and submission under God have been greatly revolted against.
